Just some Important Things on Vitamin C

By Mark Matherson

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid is a vitamin that your body needs for regular growth and maturity. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, which means that it dissolves in water. When the body absorbs what it needs from the vitamin, the leftover amount exits the body through the urine.

Because Vitamin C is not stored in the body, you need a constant supply of this nutrient in your diet. Another interesting fact of Vitamin C is that most mammals can reproduce vitamin C naturally through their bodies. However, a human body does not have this function and we have to absorb it from our diet. There are other animals as well that don't produce vitamin C, such as: higher primates, guinea pigs, bats, some birds and fish.

You can also take a dietary supplement if you are not getting enough vitamin C through your diet. The vitamin supplements are in the form of ascorbic acid and best absorbed with the help of added flavonoids to the vitamin. Vitamin C is taken more than any other supplement and is available in caplets, tablets, capsules, powder drink mixes, multi-vitamin formulas and multiple antioxidant formulas.

Weight loss isn't the only reason that you need the most popular vitamin of all time. Vitamin C, a known antioxidant also has numerous health benefits. Everyone has heard that vitamin C is good for colds and this is a true fact. It acts as a natural antihistamine and studies have shown that is can reduce cold and allergy symptoms.

The basic dosage required for adults is 90 milligrams per day for men and 75 milligrams per day for women. Teenagers (14 to 18 years old) should get 75 milligrams for males and 65 milligrams for females. Children don't need a high dosage with 1 to 3 years old taking in 15 milligrams a day, 4 to 8 years old with 25 milligrams a day and 9 to 13 years old with 45 milligrams a day.
